Winterizing your home--- A few tips.

Imagine sitting in your nice comfortable chair watching television. You got it. Now I want you to picture money (yes-actual bills) flying out your windows and under the cracks of your doors. Every year millions of households lose well-earned and needed money due to not winterizing their homes. A few simple tasks can and will prevent that hard earned money from leaving your homes so freely.

1.)    Clean those gutters-
Gutters are a great item for your home and its maintenance. The purpose of gutters is to keep the water off your roof. If the gutter was to get blocked with leaves or other debris, the water will not drain. During the winter months, this water will freeze and eventually may cause roof damage. Keeping them clean all year long is a great idea too.

2.)    Insulation-

Most people may not think about it but insulation is a vital key to keeping your home warm and cold during the different seasons. If you have not already done so maybe, have an inspector come out to check the state of your current insulation. They may or may not find any problem spots, but if they do, it will save you in the end to get them fixed now.

3.)    Drafts-
Nothing is worse than suddenly catching a cold chill because of a leak cause by cracks in old caulking or an old seal that no longer seals. (Remember the money floating out the window and under the door?) Head to your local home improvement store and grab some door sweeps (place these under the doors that lead into your home), caulk (it would be best to go around ALL windows of your home with fresh caulking for extra protection) and outlet gaskets (yes, believe it or not your outlets could be allowing old man winter into your home).

4.)    Flip the switch-
Did you know it existed? The switch that will take all of your problems away, well your warming and cooling problems anyways. Somewhere on your ceiling fans should be a switch (yes it is actually there for those who just got up to check). When the blades are turning clockwise, it is in the winter setting. This allows the cold air to rise while pushing the warm air down. Then right the opposite for the summer setting.

I really hope that this article helps you in getting your home ready for the winter. These are only a few tips and I know there are more out there. If you have, any tips please feel free to share in the comments below.

  2. You can really save money by winterizing your home. We had several really high energy bills and we did a few jobs around the house to winterize it and the energy bills went down! You wouldn't think a few small things would matter but they will add up
